Summerfest 2008

Agosto 16, 2008

As a matter of fact, Japan’s summer is quite annoying. It starts with a gradually increasing humidity and the piercing cry of the cicadas. But why complain when it only lasts for 2 months (July-August) in a year!

On second thoughts, enjoy the festivities that are celebrated all throughout the country like the Fireworks festivals and the Bon Festival Dance. There are thousand of Fireworks festivals or 「花火大会」 (Hanabi Taikai) at every place in Japan. Most of them are hold in every weekend (especially Saturday) during middle of July to middle of August.

Check this link for the Tokyo Schedules of Fireworks Festival 2008. As for the other parts of Japan, click this one (Pasencia na po dahil ito ay nakasulat sa wikang Hapon).

The Bon Festival Dance or 「盆踊り」 (Bon Odori) that accompanies the Buddhist festival 「お盆」 (Obon) or just 「盆」 (Bon), which means welcoming ancestors’ souls and holding a memorial service for the souls. There is a Bon week in August every year, and Bon continues for about a week. Anyway, the dances were originally held to console the departing spirits, but nowadays the original religious meaning has faded and simply enjoyed as entertainment. Local communities hold the Bon-Odori in open public spaces where a platform is built in the center and people dance around it. You don’t have to be a Buddhist to join, wear a ‘yukata’ and join the crowd dancing to the rhythm of Japanese traditional music. At the end of Obon, paper lanterns are lit in the evening and set afloat in rivers to guide the souls back to their heavenly home.

Sitting near the window at Starbucks, Shibuya

Do you consider a good cup of coffee to be a just another daily necessity? Perhaps to you, it is one of the finer things in life? As for me, a cup of coffee before a run perks me up all day. Coffee is the nectar of the gods! I love coffee and have been drinking it since I was a young girl (yup, my mom let me have coffee…) :D Before coming to Japan 4 years ago, I have become a bit of a coffee snob so I figured, before coming here, that I would have to learn to live without really good coffee. Indeed, I find myself frequenting Starbucks shops here more than I would like to. That’s because really good coffee shops are not abundant in Japan. However, they can be found, especially in the Tokyo/Saitama area.

Shibuya is famous for Hachiko – the statue of a dog which used to wait in the area for it’s master each day. Film buffs will probably already know that the area was used in the movie called Lost in Translation – the Starbucks here is probably one of the busiest in the world and a scene from the film was filmed through the window from there. Shibuya Crossing, the area directly in front of Shibuya Station, is the world’s busiest intersection. With its multi-story Starbucks, fifty-foot high television screens, and bright neon, it is one of the most popular images of Tokyo.

Anyways, if you are a coffee connoisseur, and are worried about starting a life in Japan without your favorite coffee shop, don’t get scared. You should be able to find a favorite local place. And, if that place happens to be mine as well, I may just let you treat me to a cup.

Greatest Form of Flattery

Agosto 4, 2008

I’ve just heard that Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart and director Christopher Nolan were all on hand at the Tokyo International Forum in Tokyo about a week ago for the Japanese premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight. Here is a video from the red carpet when Christian Bale spoke in Japanese. He’s really cute! Omigosh!

Let’s give him a round of applause.

The Dark Knight will officially open here in Japan on August 9th (road show). After I saw the amazing full trailer of this movie, I can’t wait to see this film despite Heath Ledger’s tragic death. Sad we won’t be seeing more of him, a fitting tribute to Heath for his last performance.
